What size bike do I need?
It is possible to come up with some rough guidelines based on height, but these are only an initial starting point for a proper fit consultation with your local dealer. Each person’s physical dimensions and attributes (i.e. arm length, torso length, femur length, flexibility, etc.) are slightly different and can lead to different frame size needs even for people of the same height.
Why is my bicycle shoe size so big?
It isn't really. Bicycle shoes use the European system of measurement which makes the number much bigger than the American measurement system.
Why do some cyclists I see wear those silly outfits?
Every piece of clothing a cyclist wears can drastically change the confort of a bike ride. The helmet protects your head. Sunglasses protect your eyes. The jerseys help wick away moisture. During long rides, gloves come in handy to make gripping the handlebars more comfortable as well as protect your hands in case of a fall. The shorts, though the most unattractive, really do make sitting on bicycle seat much more comfortable over long periods of time.
Do I really need to wear a helmet.
The short answer is yes, you do. Though the law states that anyone under the age of 16 must wear a helmet, everyone should wear one. A helmet is cheaper than a copay at a hospital. If ever in an accident, throughly inspect your helmet, if it is damaged in any way, buy a new one.
Is there a way for me to measure how fast I am cycling?
Yes there is. Called a computer, they can measure the speed you are going, how long you have been riding, and in some models, how fast you are spinning your legs (called cadence).
Do I need a water bottle cage?
It is a good idea to keep hydrated when exercising. That goes double for when you are exercising in the South Florida heat. A water bottle cage is in an easily accessible place for you to reach and grab your water bottle.
All those reflectors and stickers make my bike look ugly, can I take them off?
Under Florida law, a bicycle shop cannot sell a bicycle without a front and rear reflector. They really don't take up much space and do help motorists see bicycles on the street. Most stickers can be removed by the owner.
Do I need a bike lock?
If you are going to be with your bicycle at all times, then you most likely do not need a lock. If however, you are going to use your bike to go places that you cannot bring your bike inside with you, it is a great idea to lock it up. Though remember, a bike lock isn't 100% safe, it is only a deterrent.
What are those flashing lights I sometimes see on bicycles for?
For cyclists that ride at night, it can become very dangerous. Using flashing lights and extra caution can help motorists see you from far distances.
How often should I check my tire pressure?
You should check your tire pressure right before any ride. Though at minimum once a week.
How often should I clean my bicycle?
Dirt is one of the most destructive elements for a bicycle. Keeping your bike clean is a great way to keep the bike in great condition. For avid cyclists, a quick clean once after every ride is good. For less active riders, once every two rides is good.
